Does each Sex Offender have an icon on the map?
Unfortunately, No. Sometimes a Sex Offender is “Not map-able.” Basically, the address information provided to us is incomplete and does not allow us to accurately map the Sex Offender. However, the Sex Offender’s profile still appears in the list of Sex Offenders. This way you are still aware of all the registered offenders in your neighborhood, search area or monitoring areas.

Why does the sex offender icon for the offender shows up in the wrong place on the map?
We determine the offender's address on the map using census data. We find that at times an address can be 100 meters or more off which would be about 1 city block off as drawn on a map. We are working on this issue, and if you notice that an address is off, please email our customer service.

Questions about Sexual Predators and Registered Sex Offenders

Are there registered sexual offenders that are not in your database?
Unfortunately, yes. Our service relies on publicly available data. If an offender moves and does not report to the county sheriff in which they reside, we will not know that they have moved.

There is someone listed in my neighborhood or at work that left and you still show them. Why?
Our service relies on publicly available data. If a sexual offender moves and does not report their address change, we will not know that they have moved.

If I know of an offender that is not in your database, should I contactyou?
No. Please contact your local police or sheriff department. A registered sexual offender that fails to report commits a felony, and can be returned to prison.

Should I confront someone on your list? Can I make them move?
No. Harassing anyone on the offender registry is a misdemeanor and can be punished by both a fine and jail time. The purpose of this service is to allow you to identify sexual predators that you or your children may come in contact with, not as a tool to harass or intimidate anyone. Please review our Disclaimer for complete details.

I live in an upscale neighborhood. Why do I need this service?
There are over 700,000 sex offenders in the U.S. Sexual predators have no physical borders, and are not confined to any given socio-economic group.

What is Megan's Law?
In the United States, Megan's Law is the commonly used name to describe a set of laws requiring law enforcement authorities to make registered sex offender information available to the public. Individual states and law enforcement entities decide the type of information and the manner in which it is released. Prior to Megan's Law, some private citizens' groups distributed information regarding specific sex offenders in their areas.
The law is named in memory of seven-year-old Megan Kanka, who was kidnapped, raped, and murdered by a repeat, violent sexual offender. Prior to Megan's death, no information was available to the Kanka family that the sexual offender moved into their residential area. Megan's home state of New Jersey passed the first example of "Megan's Law" in 1994.

I am concerned that I really cannot tell who is and who is not a sex offender.
You are exactly right. There is no such thing as a typical sex offender. That is why it is important for you to understand common sense strategies for protecting yourself and your children that you should always follow.
To protect yourself from offenders, follow general safety guidelines, such as maintaining an awareness of your surroundings and trusting your instincts about people and situations. To protect your children, maintain open lines of communication with them—listen to your children; being available and taking time to really know your children builds feelings of safety and security.

I am very concerned about protecting my child from this type of crime. In fact, I think if my child were a victim of sexual abuse, I do not know how I could possibly handle it.
Perhaps the best thing to remember if you know or suspect that your child has been victimized is that they need, you–more than ever–to be a calm, nurturing, and protective parent. The child has endured one of the most profound violations of her or his person. It will probably be extremely difficult for your child to disclose this to you, or to deal with the emotion of knowing that you are aware of what has happened to them. It will be even more difficult for your child if they observe you losing control of your own feelings or behavior. In order to help your child, and prevent further trauma to her or him, you have to be strong for her or him. Seek help for your child. Seek help for yourself in the form of specialized counseling to help you handle your reactions.

How can children ever recover from sexual abuse?
Children are amazingly resilient. Research suggests that children who are supported when they disclose or when the victimization comes to light heal more quickly than those who are not believed. A supportive family response and professional intervention can also help to heal child victims and their families.

How will I know if my child is a victim of sexual abuse?
The thought that my child might actually be a victim and I might not know it is very worrisome tome.
The reality is that some instances of child sexual abuse never do come to light. However, the better informed you are about what to look for, the better the chance that you can know and be able to help your child. Trust your instincts; you know your child best. Any change in behavior that concerns you is worth evaluating.
